Final Reflections

Reflecting back on the Game Design module for my master's, I can't lie about feeling more knowledgeable towards my career in gaming. From learning the basics of Game Design, where we were taught to brainstorm ideas and with a simple pen and paper how one could create a prototype of any game idea. Then deep diving into the technical aspects of game design like game mechanics, game economics, balancing the game, game audio etc, the experience to understand all of these was just so positive. My personal favourite was learning about Narrative Design taught by professor Hope Caton and paper prototyping taught by professor Dr Jarek Francik. There are a few key points I'd like to discuss which I picked up with the module. 1. Having a game idea is not a big deal, but implementing that idea is the main goal. Anyone can come up with a game idea, but without the ability to implement those ideas effectively, they will remain just that - ideas. As game designers, we are free to think about possibilities and new ideas for the game. We need the idea to flow. Learning and reflecting back on my game design projects, my team's ideas were always appreciated by our professors, but the only thing we lacked was implementation.

Ultimately, the success of a game idea is determined by the ability to turn that idea into a fully-realized, engaging game that players will enjoy. This requires a combination of creativity, technical skill, and dedication, as well as a willingness to iterate and improve based on feedback from playtesting and user engagement.

So, while having a game idea is certainly important, it is just the first step in a much longer and more complex journey towards creating a successful game. 2. Keep the idea as simple as you can 3. Communication is the key

Effective communication is absolutely essential when it comes to developing a game. As it is a highly collaborative process, that guarantees success by working as a team more than solo. Developers need to be able to listen to player feedback and respond in a way that is respectful and productive. This can involve communicating updates, addressing concerns, and incorporating player suggestions into future iterations of the game.

Overall, communication is an essential component of game development, from the initial concept stage all the way through to release and beyond. Teams that prioritise communication and foster an open and collaborative environment are more likely to succeed in creating engaging, high-quality games that resonate with players. 4. Team sync= game sync A team's ability to synchronize and work together effectively is essential to creating a successful game. This applies to all aspects of game development, including design, programming, art, sound, and project management. When team members are in sync with each other, they are able to share ideas, give feedback, and work towards common goals. This allows for smoother collaboration and a more efficient development process, which in turn can help to create a better end product. In addition, team synchronization is crucial for ensuring that the game itself is well-coordinated and cohesive. Each aspect of the game, from the gameplay mechanics to the visual design and sound effects, needs to work together seamlessly in order to create an engaging and immersive experience for players. This requires careful coordination and synchronization between team members, who must be able to communicate effectively and work together to ensure that each element of the game is integrated effectively. Overall, team synchronization is an essential component of successful game development. By fostering open communication, encouraging collaboration, and working together towards common goals, game development teams can create high-quality games that resonate with players and achieve commercial success.

5. Create games for the players, not for yourself. As a game designer, it is important to remember that the ultimate goal of creating a game is to provide an enjoyable and engaging experience for players. While it can be tempting to create games that reflect your own personal interests and preferences, it is important to keep in mind that the game is being created for a wider audience. This means that it is important to consider the needs and interests of players throughout the development process. When designing a game, it is important to take into account the needs and preferences of your target audience. This can involve conducting research and gathering feedback from potential players, as well as incorporating elements that are known to be popular or engaging in the wider gaming community. Also, make sure you research your game ideas and do an analysis of your competitors. By creating games with the players in mind, game developers are more likely to create products that are engaging, enjoyable, and well-received by the gaming community. This can lead to commercial success, as well as positive reviews and feedback from players. Overall, creating games for the players, rather than for yourself, is an essential component of successful game development. By putting the needs and interests of players first, game developers can create engaging and enjoyable games that resonate with audiences and achieve commercial success.

I'm thankful to all my game design faculty members who prepared course content which taught and prepared us well. Overall, the game design module was taught with such a practical method to make sure we are ready to work in the gaming industry with all the tools and approaches while studying.
